WHAT IS "KUMALICIOUS"?

KUMALICIOUS (KOO-MAH-LISH-US) began as an art exhibition commissioned by the Queer Cultural Center for the 19th annual National Queer Arts Festival in San Francisco in the summer of 2016. It had developed into a traveling exhibition that currently showcases the work of 29 artists selected from across the globe with artworks celebrating the allure and beauty of Queer bigger men of color inspired by Gay Japanese Manga.

From gachimuchi (“chubby muscle”) to BDSM eroticism, artists share depictions inspired by the Gay Japanese Manga genre made popular by its canon artists including artists such as Jiraiya, Gengoroh Tagame, and Seizoh Ebisubashi, to name a few. This exhibition seeks to provide a rare glance at works depicting underrepresented populations often neglected in mainstream art.

KUMALICIOUS held an exhibit in partnership with MASSIVE Goods, a fashion icon/publisher/creative agency representing Queer and feminist artists in Japan. The inaugural exhibition showed at SOMArts Cultural Center's Bay Gallery from Tuesday, June 14th through Tuesday, June 21st, 2016 and included participation at the Cartoon Art Museum’s 2016 Queer Comics Expo. From June 26th through October 16th, 2016, KUMALICIOUS had a limited online exhibition engagement online via this website which has been extended through December 31st, 2021.

The 2017 exhibition at Strut featured 29 artists from across the globe and over three dozen artworks on display. The online exhibition is online via this website through January 2018. A limited number of giclée archival print reproductions of the artworks are available for purchase. Quantities are printed in small batches of five (5) and are available on a first come, first serve basis.
